I still struggle drawing a nude figure. Pencil drawing and painting digitally are worlds apart for me. For some reason I can draw a person if I am thinking abut their clothing. What shape is their shirt? Skirt? Hat? These are shapes my brain quickly recognizes. Suddenly I find myself taking a Theater Costuming class and we are have to draw nudes every day. After struggling for a few days (I think my hubby was going to boot me out of the house until I was in a better mood) I found out a couple of things.
1) I draw BIG. I am always running into the edge of the paper. I draw a great head or back arch and boom! I have no room for feet and arms. So, instead of erasing 100 times and trying to re-size my drawing to fit my medium - I made a medium fit me. I have a stash of legal sized paper and I just kept taping pieces together as I needed them. Leg getting longer? Add another paper! Arm stretching out in a beautiful arch? Add another paper!
2) Models! I don’t have a whole bunch of friends who want to come over and stand naked in my living room – I just don’t know why! It may have something to do with them being my coworkers (and that means Elementary School Teachers) so I needed to find a model source that was awesome and had some variety. I tried looking up photos here on DA but it still was not working for me. So I jumped onto Google and found this:
The Croquis Cafe: www.youtube.com/channel/UCAZZ8…
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED!?!
They have so many great videos, live model videos, stills, and even 360 degree videos for sculptures! And beautiful people with all kinds of body types and poses! I loosened up a little by trying to draw their 1 min. poses then paused the video on a model I liked until I had my sketch finished. Check it out and give it a try! Or at least book mark it if you want to come back and get some inspiration.
So now, I will take this rough draft and redraw it on some large newspaper print I am fortunate to have. I am still not sure her arms and legs are exactly the correct lengths. I have been working to get them the right size. At first they were VERRRY long, lol. I think her arms still are.
